What Makes a Home?

What makes a home? Today Harper was running very thin with little sleep last night and a busy full day today. We were on another beach, not the one we have been camping at and it was cloudy, windy, and cold. Harper started whining and said, “I just want to go home!” For a second, I envisioned our family home in Denver. That she wanted to be cuddled up on our couch watching a movie. So I asked her, “Home?” “What do you mean?” Her response was, “I just want to be in the van back at our beach!”

This made me think about what is it about the word “home”. What makes a home? We have now been living in the van for 7 weeks. We have settled into a routine that exist of me organizing every morning, putting everything in its place, making our beds, and making it feel clean and comfortable. We all have our places we like to be, the place we go when getting into the van for the night. We each have our cozy blankets and pillow, we all know where our favorite snacks are, where are clean clothes are, and mom is only a short distance away to be able to ask for anything.

It made me smile today when she adapted to home being in our small van, parked back at the beach we have been for 2.5 weeks. It made me smile because it made me think about what home means and it must mean being with your family, feeling safe and loved, being comfortable to laugh or cry or be frustrated, a place where you can just be you, to be able to eat a yummy meal and then crawl into a warm bed and lay your head down knowing you are loved by everyone in your space.

I made a promise to myself that on this trip I would reflect and be aware of my thoughts. Also, that I would hopefully bring back somethings to instill in our day to day normal life. And this is one of them! To remind myself that our kids do not care about how big our house is, what car we drive, what our clothes look like, or if I am fit or feeling fat, but instead it all is about how they FEEL in your presence! That your love is where home is. That only after 7 weeks, home to Harper is in our small van parked at a beautiful beach in Baja Mexico she has only known for 2.5 weeks! How cool is that!?❤️
